Adulting

Last week, Talia called: Blue, her 2006 Honda Pilot, needed help. As it turns out, Blue needed more than help; it needed an overhaul. And since the car was twenty years old, we decided that pouring thousands of dollars into Blue didn’t make sense. Which meant that Talia needed to do a few things as the truly full-fledged adult she is.

These included:

  • Talking to the mechanic
  • Reserving and renting a car
  • Managing a ride to and from the rental car place, twice
  • Securing a car loan
  • Buying a car

I don’t know about you, or her, but I don’t like doing any of the above tasks, especially buying a car when I didn’t anticipate having to buy a car. But that’s life, right, having to make adjustments to the plan you have in place? It’s also something Talia will encounter more and more in her adult life.

Now, as an adult myself, I can recognize that adulting—even when someone else has to do it—isn’t much fun at times. On the other hand, Talia is now the proud owner of a new-to-her car: the stars and planets aligned, Talia had the privilege and credit history to be approved for a loan, and she found a car she liked. Moreover, Blue will soon be off to a car donation site of my choice. So in the end, it’s a win-win for the people involved, something for which I’m extremely grateful.
