Prompts

I used to get up early to write, and I ran after the kids left for school. Now, I run before Melina leaves the house, and I haven’t yet found a good time to write. That problem needs to be remedied, and it will, but for now, I’m forcing myself to stare writing prompts in the face and do something about them.

The prompts for today are:

  • The Quiet After: Write about what happens in the hour after you decide not to do something you usually do. What fills the space? What tries to?
  • A Room Without Witnesses: Imagine a version of your life that no one can document, like, or comment on. What changes? What becomes more vivid?
  • Inventory of Attention: Make a list of ten things that have claimed your attention this week. Then choose one and write about it as if it were a character with motives and desires.
  • The Artifact: Describe an ordinary object on your desk as though it will be discovered 100 years from now. What story would it tell about you?
  • The Almost-Message: Write the message you almost sent—but didn’t. Then write the response you wish you would have received.

Since fiction truly is my jam, I’ll use the prompts within the context of one of my characters. It remains to be seen what I do, or do not do, with the products of this exercise.
