#ThrowbackThursdayBookstagram: Love Walked In

#ThrowbackThursdayBookstagram for this first Thursday of April is LOVE WALKED IN by Marisa de los Santos.

Though the book was first published in 2005, I didn’t pick it up until 2008 when I was pregnant with my youngest child. I distinctly remember standing at the front of my class, hiding my burgeoning belly behind the podium, telling my anatomy and physiology students how much I was enjoying this book. I became a fan of de los Santos then, and I’ve read every book of hers since. (And I’m not the only one, of course! Sarah Jessica Parker said of the book, “Exquisite and stylish, Love Walked In proves that love in all of its forms—romantic, friendship, familial—is all around us.) Wondering what it’s about? Well here here’s the synopsis:

“When Martin Grace enters the hip Philadelphia coffee shop Cornelia Brown manages, her life changes forever. But little does she know that her newfound love is only the harbinger of greater changes to come. Meanwhile, across town, Clare Hobbs–eleven years old and abandoned by her erratic mother–goes looking for her lost father. She crosses paths with Cornelia while meeting with him at the café, and the two women form an improbable friendship that carries them through the unpredictable currents of love and life.”

Another thing I love is that de los Santos is a poet, and this novel showcases her ability beautiful. Each word is exactly the right one, and each sentence is crafted perfectly. One can learn so much about imagery, words, emotions, and writing in general from authors who write like she does. Her newest novel, WATCH US SHINE, will be out June 6!
