#ThrowbackThursdayBookstagram: Still Alice

Is there such a thing as #ThrowbackThursdayBookstagram? Or maybe #ThrowbackThursday #Bookstagram? No matter! It’s here now if it wasn’t before.

Each Thursday (or maybe every other Thursday, depending on my schedule), I’m going to highlight a book I’ve read over on my Instagram account, and I’ll do my best to post here too. My list is so long, I thought of HOW to choose, and I went with the easiest solution: I’m starting with the first book I ever put into my #Goodreads account: STILL ALICE by Lisa Genova.

The book gives voice to Alice, a Harvard professor who learns she has early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Alice is aware of the disease and the progression it is taking, the toll it has on her family, and that awareness was both striking and heartbreaking. A scientist by training, Genova does a fantastic job of giving us information a reader might need to know to understand the disease better without overwhelming them. This book means something different to me now that my mom has Alzheimer’s and my dad has vascular dementia, but even when I first read it, Genova’s words touched me. If you’re looking for a good, solid read that hits you in the gut, this one might be for you.
